🌐 ChatGPT Atlas Browser Review: The AI That Remembers Every Site You Visit

A 24-hour hands-on test reveals that ChatGPT Atlas solves frustrating browsing problems, such as lost websites and constant app switching, but comes with a privacy trade-off that divides users.

Problems it solves:

  • Finds websites you visited but can't remember the name or URL
  • Eliminates copy-pasting between ChatGPT and browser tabs
  • Answers questions about any webpage without leaving the page
  • Completes multi-step tasks like building PC part lists automatically
  • Integrates all past ChatGPT conversations into browsing experience

Real-world test results:

  • Agent mode successfully built a custom gaming PC on PCPartPicker using past conversations
  • Browsing memory recalled vague website details from history instantly
  • ChatGPT sidebar answered article questions without context-switching
  • Search results open directly in the browser instead of jumping between apps
  • Works seamlessly for ChatGPT's 700+ million existing users

The catch:

  • Requires trusting OpenAI with the entire browsing history
  • Browser logs every site visit to personalize AI responses
  • The optional agent mode can access logged-in accounts
  • Concentrates digital life control in a single company
  • Search history trains AI models only if you opt in

Why it matters:

While Atlas genuinely solves everyday frustrations like lost websites and app-switching, hands-on testing exposes the core trade-off of AI browsers: convenience requires giving one company centralized access to your entire digital life, forcing users to decide whether solving small annoyances is worth the privacy implications.

⚖️ Reddit Sues Perplexity for “Industrial-Scale” Data Scraping

Reddit filed a lawsuit against Perplexity and three data-scraping companies, accusing them of bypassing anti-scraping measures to steal user posts and sell them for AI training without permission.

What's new:

  • Reddit sued Perplexity, Oxylabs, AWMProxy, and SerpApi in the New York federal court
  • Lawsuit alleges "data laundering" where scrapers mask identities to steal content
  • Companies scrape Reddit results from Google search to bypass Reddit's protections
  • Reddit sent a cease-and-desist letter. Perplexity increased Reddit citations 40-fold
  • Reddit set a trap with a hidden test post visible only to Google that appeared in Perplexity results
  • Second Reddit lawsuit against AI companies after suing Anthropic in June
  • Reddit has licensing deals with OpenAI and Google worth nearly 10% of revenue

Perplexity's response:

  • Claims it doesn't train models on Reddit but only summarizes and cites posts
  • Called the lawsuit "extortion" and "intimidation" tied to licensing negotiations
  • Says Reddit demanded payment despite lawful data access
  • Describes the lawsuit as an attack on the open internet and public interest

Why it matters:

While Reddit has monetized its data through licensing deals with OpenAI and Google, the lawsuit exposes the emerging "data laundering" economy where scraping firms bypass platform protections to resell content to AI companies unwilling to pay for access.

With Reddit becoming the most-cited source in Perplexity's AI answers and data licensing representing 10% of Reddit's revenue, the case will test whether platforms can legally protect user-generated content from unauthorized AI training when companies scrape through intermediaries rather than direct access.

🎬 Netflix Goes "All In" on Generative AI Despite Hollywood Backlash

Netflix announced it's fully embracing generative AI as a creative tool, using it for VFX, de-aging actors, and pre-production, while Hollywood remains deeply divided over the technology's impact on jobs.

What's new:

  • CEO Ted Sarandos declared Netflix is "all in" on AI during earnings call
  • First used gen AI in "The Eternaut" to create a building collapse scene
  • "Happy Gilmore 2" used AI to de-age characters in the opening scene
  • "Billionaires' Bunker" used AI for pre-production wardrobe and set design
  • Netflix positioning AI as efficiency tool for creatives, not content replacement
  • Q3 revenue grew 17% year-over-year to $11.5 billion

Netflix's stance:

  • "AI can give creatives better tools, but doesn't make you a great storyteller."
  • Focus on helping creators "tell stories better, faster, and in new ways"
  • Not using AI as the backbone of content creation
  • "Not worried about AI replacing creativity"
  • Believes AI will enhance TV/movie experiences for members

Industry tensions:

  • SAG-AFTRA and Bryan Cranston urged OpenAI for stronger deepfake protections
  • Sora 2 was released without guardrails preventing actor deepfakes
  • AI actress Tilly Norwood caused uproar among Hollywood actors
  • VFX jobs remain vulnerable to AI automation
  • Artists concerned about non-consensual use of work as training data

Why it matters:

While Hollywood unions fought for AI protections in recent strikes and actors demand safeguards against deepfakes, Netflix's full embrace of generative AI signals that major studios will prioritize efficiency over creative concerns.

With the streaming giant using AI for VFX, de-aging, and pre-production rather than replacing actors entirely, the technology is reshaping behind-the-scenes roles, even as Netflix insists creativity remains human-driven, setting a precedent that could accelerate AI adoption across the entertainment industry.
