🤖 Google Launches Gemini 3 With Record Benchmark Performance

Google released the Gemini 3 foundation model seven months after Gemini 2.5, delivering breakthrough reasoning capabilities with record-breaking scores on industry benchmarks.

What's new:

  • Available now through the Gemini app and AI search for 650 million monthly active users
  • Scored 37.4 on Humanity's Last Exam benchmark, beating GPT-5 Pro's 31.64 record
  • Topped the LMArena leaderboard measuring user satisfaction
  • Gemini 3 Deepthink research version launching for Ultra subscribers after safety testing
  • Antigravity coding IDE combines a prompt window, a command-line, and a browser preview
  • Multi-pane interface enables agentic coding similar to Cursor 2.0 and Warp
  • Agent builds applications by working across the editor, terminal, and browser
  • 13 million developers already using Gemini in workflow
  • Released one week after OpenAI's GPT-5.1 and two months after Anthropic's Sonnet 4.5

Why it matters:

Gemini 3's 18% performance jump over GPT-5 Pro shifts the competitive landscape as Google's 650 million user base provides an instant distribution advantage over ChatGPT's smaller reach. The model's record benchmarks come as the AI race accelerates, with major releases from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic all landing within weeks of each other.

However, releasing Deepthink while still pending safety testing shows how the competitive pressure forces AI labs to ship frontier models before completing comprehensive safety validation. The Antigravity IDE expands Google's reach beyond just model development into developer tools, directly challenging established coding assistants.

💻 OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 Pro and Autonomous 24-Hour Codex Max

OpenAI upgraded GPT-5 Pro to GPT-5.1 Pro for all Pro users with improved writing and data science capabilities, while launching GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, a frontier coding model using "compaction" technology to work autonomously for 24+ hours across millions of tokens.

What's new:

GPT-5.1 Pro:

  • Now available to all ChatGPT Pro users, replacing GPT-5 Pro
  • Early testing showed users consistently preferred it for writing, data science, and business tasks
  • GPT-5 Pro remains available for 90 days before retirement
  • Launched November 19 alongside Gemini 3 rollout

GPT-5.1-Codex-Max:

  • Available now in Codex CLI, IDE extensions, cloud platforms, and code review tools
  • First model trained to operate across multiple context windows using compaction
  • Automatically compacts sessions when approaching context limits to continue working
  • Scored 77.9% on SWE-bench Verified, beating GPT-5.1-Codex's 73.7%
  • Achieved 79.9% on SWE-Lancer IC SWE and 58.1% on Terminal Bench 2.0
  • Uses 30% fewer thinking tokens while delivering higher accuracy
  • First model with native Windows environment training
  • Internal evaluations show the model working independently for 24+ hours on single tasks
  • Replaces GPT-5.1-Codex as the default across Codex surfaces
  • API access coming soon

Why it matters:

OpenAI launched both models within 24 hours of Gemini 3 to counter Google's benchmark wins by focusing on endurance instead of raw power. GPT-5.1-Codex-Max's compaction solves the context memory problem, letting developers start complex coding projects that run autonomously for 24+ hours without losing track.

However, retiring GPT-5 Pro just three months after launch may make enterprises hesitant to adopt models that quickly become outdated. OpenAI admits GPT-5.1-Codex-Max is its strongest cybersecurity model, but still doesn't meet its own "High" risk threshold, showing the tension between racing to ship competitive features and ensuring proper safety testing.

🎨 Google Debuts Nano Banana Pro With 4K Video Generation and Pro Editing Tools

Google launched Nano Banana Pro, built on Gemini 3, adding 2K/4K resolution, web search integration, and advanced photography controls for professionals across its AI tools.

What's new:

  • Generates 2K and 4K images compared to Nano Banana's 1024 x 1024px max
  • Web search pulls recipes and creates flash cards automatically
  • Controls camera angles, lighting, depth of field, focus, and color grading
  • Renders text in different styles, fonts, and languages
  • Combines up to 14 objects or six reference photos in one image
  • Keeps a consistent look for up to five people across multiple images
  • SynthID tool detects if images were AI-generated in the Gemini app
  • Costs $0.139 per 2K image and $0.24 per 4K versus $0.039 for the original
  • Now the default in the Gemini app with limits for free users
  • Works in Notebook LM, AI Mode search, Flow, Google Slides, Vids, Antigravity IDE

Why it matters:

Nano Banana Pro gives designers and marketers precise camera and lighting controls instead of just artistic styles, combining mockup creation and product visualization in one tool. The web search feature pulls live data that standalone tools like Midjourney can't access.

The 3x-6x higher price and slower speed make it better for final work than quick iterations. Free users hit limits quickly and drop back to the basic model, while Google's watermark detection doesn't use the industry-standard C2PA format.
