🔍 Google launches Search Live for real-time visual AI search

Google officially rolled out Search Live nationwide, letting US users point their phone camera at any object and have real-time conversations with Gemini AI to identify items, troubleshoot problems, or get instant answers about their surroundings.

What's new:

  • Live icon appears under search bar in Google app for iOS and Android
  • Real-time conversational AI powered by Gemini models
  • Camera provides a visual context while you speak naturally
  • Also accessible through Google Lens with automatic camera mode
  • No beta signup or invite required after months of limited testing
  • Traditional web links still appear alongside AI responses
  • US English only for initial launch

How it works:

  • Point the camera at confusing cables to identify HDMI 2.1 ports
  • Scan unfamiliar landmarks while traveling for instant info
  • Troubleshoot devices by showing them to the AI
  • Get help choosing products by scanning store shelves
  • Ask questions about plants, objects, or technical equipment
  • Combines visual recognition with conversational responses

Why it matters:

While competitors like OpenAI explore multimodal AI, Google leverages its unique advantage of owning the world's most comprehensive web index, combined with Gemini's conversational abilities.

This transforms smartphones into real-time problem-solving tools, moving beyond traditional text-based search toward natural, visual conversations that could redefine how people access information in everyday situations.

🤝 Microsoft Adds Claude AI to 365 Copilot, Easing OpenAI Dependence

Microsoft announced it's adding Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4.1 models to Microsoft 365 Copilot, giving business users their first choice between AI providers and signaling a strategic shift away from exclusive reliance on OpenAI.

Where Claude is available:

Researcher agent:

  • Choose between OpenAI's reasoning models or Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1
  • Complex analysis tasks like market strategies and industry trend reports
  • Works across emails, chats, meetings, and organizational files
  • Simple "Try Claude" button for model switching

Copilot Studio:

  • Both Claude Sonnet 4 and Opus 4.1 are available for custom agent building
  • Mix-and-match models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Azure Model Catalog
  • Enterprise-grade agents for workflow automation and deep reasoning
  • Drop-down menu selection within the platform

Rollout details:

  • Available now through Frontier Program for licensed customers
  • Administrators must enable access in Microsoft 365 admin center
  • Models hosted on Amazon Web Services, not Microsoft Azure
  • Subject to Anthropic's terms of service, not Microsoft's agreements
  • Production availability expected by the end of the year

Why it matters:

While Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI and built its AI strategy around GPT models, this integration marks a decisive move toward AI diversification.

With internal testing showing Claude outperforming OpenAI in specific productivity workflows, Microsoft is hedging against over-dependence on a single provider while giving enterprise customers flexibility to choose optimal models for different business needs.

🚀 Alibaba Launches Qwen3-Max, Partners With Nvidia, and $53B Global AI Expansion

Alibaba announced its trillion-parameter Qwen3-Max AI model alongside a strategic Nvidia partnership and expanded data center investment plans at the Apsara Conference, positioning the Chinese tech giant as a direct competitor to Western AI leaders.

Qwen3-Max specifications:

  • Over 1 trillion parameters, Alibaba's largest model ever
  • Trained on 36 trillion tokens with advanced architecture
  • 262,144-token context window for million-word inputs
  • Two versions: live Instruct and upcoming "Thinking" model
  • Compatible APIs with OpenAI for developer migration
  • Closed-source commercial model, unlike previous releases

Performance benchmarks:

  • Top-3 global ranking on Text Arena, beating GPT-5-Chat
  • 69.6 score on SWE-Bench coding benchmark
  • 74.8 on Tau2-Bench, outperforming Claude and DeepSeek
  • Superior autonomous agent capabilities
  • Excels at code generation and multi-step reasoning

Infrastructure expansion:

  • ¥380 billion ($53B) three-year AI investment commitment
  • CEO pledges additional spending beyond the original plan
  • New data centers to support trillion-parameter training
  • Nvidia partnership for advanced GPU infrastructure

Why it matters:

While Western labs pursue smaller, efficient models, Alibaba's trillion-parameter approach demonstrates China's commitment to frontier AI competition.

With top international benchmark performance and strong Asian language capabilities, Qwen3-Max positions Alibaba as a credible alternative to OpenAI and Google, particularly as the company scales infrastructure to support the most demanding AI workloads.
