💻 Google Tests Spotlight-Style Search Bar for Windows With Lens Integration

Google released its first experimental Windows desktop app through Search Labs, providing instant search across files, apps, Google Drive, and the web using the Alt+Space shortcut, similar to macOS Spotlight.

What's new:

  • Alt+Space shortcut opens universal search from anywhere
  • Searches local files, installed apps, Google Drive, and web
  • Google Lens is built in for screen capture and translation
  • Works over full-screen apps and games without switching windows
  • AI Mode provides deeper responses with follow-up questions
  • Available through the Google Search Labs experiment program
  • English-only, US users first, personal accounts required

Key features:

  • Pill-shaped search bar appears instantly over any app
  • Results grouped by Apps/Websites, Google Drive, Files, Web
  • Google Lens highlights text and images for translation
  • Knowledge Panel-style instant answers for quick info
  • Direct access to AI Overviews and conversational AI

Why it matters:

This marks Google's rare venture into native desktop apps, directly competing with Microsoft's PowerToys Run and bringing Mac-like search convenience to Windows. The app signals Google's strategy to integrate AI search deeper into desktop workflows.

By combining local and cloud search with AI capabilities, Google is positioning itself as the universal search solution beyond just web browsing.

🎨 Microsoft Paint Adds Project Files and Layered Editing Like Photoshop

Microsoft introduced major Paint upgrades for Windows 11, bringing .paint project files that preserve layers and edits, plus opacity controls and AI integration, positioning the free app as a legitimate Photoshop alternative.

The key updates:

Project Files (.paint format):

  • Save layered artwork in an editable format, like Photoshop's PSD
  • Preserve layers, transparency, and editing states
  • Resume multi-session projects without losing progress
  • Share editable files for collaborative work

Enhanced editing tools:

  • Opacity sliders for pencil and brush tools
  • Soft shading and blending effects are now possible
  • Real-time transparency control during drawing
  • Works alongside existing layers and transparency features

Availability:

  • Windows Insiders in Dev and Canary channels
  • Paint app version 11.2508.361.0 or newer required
  • General rollout expected in the coming weeks

Why it matters:

While Adobe charges monthly subscriptions for basic creative tools, Microsoft is transforming its free Paint app into a capable editor with professional features.

This direct challenge to Photoshop's entry-level market could capture students, hobbyists, and casual creators facing subscription fatigue, potentially forcing Adobe to reconsider its pricing strategy for basic digital art tools.
