📰 New York Times Battles Perplexity Over AI Use of its News Articles

The New York Times is taking legal action against AI search startup Perplexity, demanding it stop using NYT content without permission.

Here’s what's happening:

  • NYT sent a cease and desist letter to Perplexity
  • Claims Perplexity's AI-generated summaries violate copyright law
  • Perplexity reportedly promised to stop crawling NYT content, but results still appear
  • Perplexity is backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos
  • The AI company says it's open to working with publishers
  • NYT previously sued OpenAI and Microsoft over similar issues

Why it matters:

This clash highlights the growing tension between news publishers and AI companies. As AI tools get better at understanding and using written content, publishers are worried about protecting their work and business models.

It's not just about the NYT – this fight could set the tone for how news and AI companies work together (or don't) in the future. It also raises questions about what's fair use when it comes to training AI on published content.

🎥 Adobe's Firefly AI Now Makes Videos and Speeds Up Photo Editing

Adobe just supercharged its Firefly AI with new video creation tools and faster photo editing features.

What's new:

  • Generate images 4x faster in Firefly web app
  • Create and extend video clips using text prompts with Firefly Video Model
  • Access new 100+ AI tools in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro
  • Use "Generative Workspace" in Photoshop for easier brainstorming
  • Translate videos with AI-powered dubbing and lip-sync (in beta)
  • Model trained only on Adobe Stock and public domain content

Why it matters:

Adobe's pushing AI deeper into creative work, making it easier for both pros and beginners to make videos and edit photos. The new video tools could change how people make everything from social media clips to movies.

With over 13 billion AI-generated images since March 2023, Firefly is already hugely popular. These updates show Adobe's racing to stay ahead in the AI creativity race, while also trying to make its AI safe for commercial use.

🤖 Tesla's Robot Steals the Show at Robotaxi Unveiling Event

Elon Musk's Optimus humanoid robot unexpectedly became the star at Tesla's recent "We, Robot" event.

What happened:

  • Event was meant to showcase Tesla's new robotaxi
  • Optimus robot drew more attention than the self-driving car
  • Optimus robots moved freely among attendees, playing games and pouring drinks
  • Elon Musk called it "the biggest product ever of any kind"
  • Robots appeared to interact autonomously with the crowd
  • In reality, they were controlled by humans in special suits
  • One Optimus admitted: "Today I'm assisted by a human, I'm not yet fully autonomous"

Why it matters:

While Tesla's trying to make a splash in the self-driving car world, their humanoid robot is turning heads. This shows Tesla's big ambitions in AI and robotics, not just electric cars. But there are questions about how real Optimus's abilities are and if Tesla can deliver on its promises.

As Tesla competes with other tech giants in AI and robotics, this event shows they're willing to blur the lines between reality and aspiration. It highlights the gap between public demonstrations and true AI capabilities, reminding us to take bold tech claims with a grain of salt.

💻 ChatGPT Lands on Windows with New Desktop App

OpenAI has launched a preview of ChatGPT for Windows, bringing its popular AI chatbot to Microsoft's operating system. Currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, the app offers features like file and photo uploads, document summarization, and image generation using DALL-E 3.

The app can be minimized to a small “companion” window, letting you use it while working on other tasks for easy multitasking.

While it supports OpenAI's newest o1-preview model, the app currently lacks voice capabilities and some GPT Store integrations.

OpenAI plans to release a "full experience" later this year, potentially expanding the app's functionality and user base.
