🎬 OpenAI’s Sora App Adds Character Cameos for Pets and Objects Amid Cameo Lawsuit

OpenAI rolled out character cameos for Sora, letting users create reusable AI avatars of pets, toys, and illustrations, just days after celebrity platform Cameo sued OpenAI for trademark infringement over the feature’s name.

What’s new:

  • Character cameos create reusable AI avatars from any uploaded video
  • Works for pets, toys, illustrations, and original personas
  • Users assign display names, descriptions, and animation instructions
  • Video stitching combines multiple clips into longer multi-scene stories
  • Leaderboards show the most remixed videos and frequently used cameos
  • Invite-free access is now available in the US, Canada, Japan, and Korea for a limited time
  • Expanded to Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam

The trademark battle:

  • Cameo platform filed a lawsuit challenging OpenAI’s use of the “cameo” name
  • Claims consumer confusion and brand dilution
  • OpenAI disputes that “anyone can claim exclusive ownership over the word.”
  • Lawsuit filed just days before character cameo feature launched

Why it matters:

Sora crossed 1 million downloads faster than ChatGPT despite being invite-only. OpenAI’s expansion into character cameos arrives amid mounting legal and ethical controversies. From Hollywood backlash over copyright violations to trademark disputes over feature naming.

The character cameo launch demonstrates OpenAI’s pattern of releasing boundary-pushing features first and addressing legal fallout later, as the company navigates consent and intellectual property questions that remain largely unresolved.

🎬 TikTok Debuts Smart Split & AI Outline And Raises Creator Revenue to 90%

TikTok unveiled Smart Split for auto-editing long videos into short clips and AI Outline for content planning, while increasing subscription revenue share from 70% to 90% for qualifying creators at its US Creator Summit.

What's new:

  • Smart Split automatically clips, reframes, captions, and transcribes videos over one minute into TikTok-ready shorts
  • AI Outline generates six-part video frameworks with titles, hashtags, hooks, and scripts based on prompts or trending topics
  • Creators select video segments or let Smart Split determine optimal clip lengths
  • All AI suggestions undergo Community Guidelines safety checks

The revenue shift:

  • Base subscription revenue share increased from 50% to 70% after app store fees
  • Additional 20% monthly bonus for creators with 10,000 followers, 100,000 monthly views, and 3+ subscriber-only videos
  • New 90% maximum split applies to North American and Canadian creators starting October 1, 2025

Why it matters:

While TikTok's algorithm favors frequent posting, manual editing has remained a barrier to consistent content delivery for creators repurposing podcasts and vlogs. Smart Split competes directly with tools like OpusClip and MrBeast's Vyro by eliminating that friction.

The 90% revenue split positions TikTok more competitively against YouTube and Twitch, signaling a shift toward exclusive subscription communities rather than ad-supported content, though the move comes as TikTok's US future remains uncertain.

🏢 Grammarly Becomes Superhuman, Launches AI Assistant Across Gmail, Drive & Calendar

Grammarly renamed itself Superhuman after acquiring the email client in July and launched Superhuman Go, an AI assistant that integrates with workplace apps to automate tasks like ticket logging and scheduling while providing context-aware writing suggestions.

What's new:

  • Superhuman Go is built into the existing Grammarly extension with a toggle for app connections
  • Connects with Jira, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar to execute tasks and fetch context
  • Agent store includes plagiarism checker and proofreader from the August launch
  • Pro plan at $12/month adds multilingual grammar and tone support
  • Business plan at $33/month includes Superhuman Mail access
  • Planned CRM and internal system integration for automated email suggestions

The rebrand:

  • Company adopted the Superhuman name while keeping the Grammarly product branding unchanged
  • Coda productivity platform, acquired in December 2024, may rebrand in the future
  • Future AI features planned for Coda documents and Superhuman email clients

Why it matters:

While Grammarly built its reputation on grammar correction over 15 years, adopting the Superhuman name signals a strategic repositioning from writing tool to AI-powered productivity suite competing directly with Notion, ClickUp, and Google Workspace.

The unusual move of an acquirer taking its acquisition's brand identity reflects Grammarly's bet that workplace productivity matters more than writing assistance in the AI era, though maintaining separate product names suggests hedging against alienating its established user base.
